What Matters in Your Metatags

“Do Meta Keywords Matter Anymore?” The answer is NO (according to Matt Cutts back in 2009), but I still tell clients to fill something in there, just confusing as this looks like it could be a title tag a lot of time with the meta keyword field.

Here’s some basics that I follow…

Title Tag –

The FIRST LINE SEEN – Your Title tag should be 60-80 characters – not words. And I suggest trying to utilize all the space. Stick to page relevancy for every page.

You may use any of the following separators as I’ve seen them all.  Using the “,” will allow for an extra word or two if you need it.

“|” (up and down slash)
“,” (comma)
“-” (hyphen)
“:” (colon)

Description Tag –

This section can be “sentence format” and should include a catchy phrase including your search term(s). This is where Google captures a portion of the description and it’s shown in the search results – what will make that viewer click on your site versus the other websites on the search results page? I suggest approx. 150 characters.

Keywords Tag – this is not relevant anymore

It’s good to have keywords just focusing on search phrases relevant to the page, all lower case, separated with a “,” and a space between, approx. 150-200 characters.
